For some of us, it takes a little while to get back in the swing of things at work after the New Year. So spare a thought for employees at Marquardt’s new German factory, which only opened on December 14 last year!

Nexus supplier Marquardt has opened a new plant in Ichtershausen, Thuringia, and will spend the next few months assembling a team of 50 - over time it will grow to a workforce of 180.

It’s just the latest location for this growing international company, which hasn’t stood still since it was begun in the 1920s by two business partners (who were not related, but were both called Johannes Marquardt!).

Their business creating simple switches in their own homes has grown to a 11,000-employee concern, turning over more than £1bn per year. Unlike many businesses started in the early 20th century, it survived both the financial crash of the 1930s and the Second World War.

Because, quite simply, Marquardt has never stood still. The original Marquardt partners would not recognise the range of products developed and innovated by the company now - e-drive bikes, industrial applications, and complex mechatronic systems for the new generation of electrified cars.

Every year, Marquardt puts aside around 10% of its revenues for research & development - making sure it stays ahead of the game by developing new, marketable technologies that answer the needs of fast-moving industries.

And it develops its workforce with a family focus - providing child day care facilities and various internships in technical and sales careers to ensure it retains and develops its quality staff.

Still the global market leader in the industry they started in nearly a century ago - power tool switches - the company continues to develop new products whilst remaining true to its roots.
